It Ain't Much, But It's Honest Work

2014 — 2023
"The farmer went home"
Obituary
On October 10, 2014, the USDA published an article about soil health featuring Ohio farmer David Brandt standing in his cornfield. For four years, the photo collected dust in some government archive, waiting for its moment.
That moment came on December 15, 2018, when Reddit's r/MemeEconomy captioned the weathered farmer with "It ain't much, but it's honest work." The phrase was ironic—used to describe minimal effort presented as noble toil. Got 10 upvotes on your OC? Honest work. Ate one vegetable? Honest work. Did the bare minimum and survived? Brother, that's honest work.
But David Brandt was the real deal. A pioneer of no-till agriculture, he spent his life proving you could farm without destroying the soil. The meme captured his genuine humility, even if the internet used it sarcastically.
On May 20, 2023, David Brandt died from injuries sustained while working his field. The man behind the meme passed doing exactly what the caption described—honest work, until the very end. Reddit's memorial post showed other memes welcoming him home.
It was much. It was honest. Rest easy, farmer.
